The solution from NetFoundry, Arm, and Capgemini to be unveiled and demoed by Arm at AWS re:invent 2021

Automobiles are becoming software. In fact, connected vehicles already use four times as many lines of code as commercial aircraft, and autonomous fleets are now on the horizon. This enables software providers to innovate in new and exciting ways to provide unique driver experiences and digital features for vehicles.

However, while connected and autonomous vehicles are epicenters for new software innovation, they are also targets for cyberattackers. Security is not a feature when an autonomous truck can be transformed into a missile by cyberattackers – providing the strongest security is an absolute requirement.

This is why NetFoundry, Arm and Capgemini worked together to provide the first Zero Trust platform for connected vehicles. Arm will demonstrate the solution by request at AWS re:Invent 2021 in Arm booth 1667.

The solution enables private connections, as code, from AWS Greengrass to AWS IoT Core, without the vehicles being exposed to the networks, and leverages industry standard solutions and open source software such as the Ziti Zero Trust software and Parsec.

The Zero Trust solution combines confidential computing and confidential connectivity to enable OEMs, developers and solution providers to develop, deliver and manage connected and autonomous vehicle applications, without dependencies on specific hardware, networks or clouds.  The developers are abstracted from the underlying security complexities, focusing on their specific applications, while providing the strongest levels of security.

“Ultimately, the base contract of future mobility solutions is safety, reliability, and robustness. All features provided by software must comply with this contract. We believe that adherence to Zero Trust principles will allow automotive OEMs, software developers, and suppliers to create a strong technology foundation for data privacy, security, and cyber security requirements.”  –  Alexndre Audoin, Group Industry Leader for Automotive, Capgemini.

“To make a connected vehicle secure, you need to take the vehicle off the network – make it unreachable from the networks. Sounds paradoxical, but that is what we did with Arm and Capgemini. Developers and providers innovate on top of that secure by design platform, rather than using their time on bolted-on security.  – Galeal Zino, NetFoundry Founder & CEO, NetFoundry.

“As the amount of software increases throughout the vehicle so must the level of security, and this collaboration with NetFoundry and Capgemini is a step toward ensuring the highest levels of security are built into automotive technology from the ground up.” – Robert Day, Director of Auto Partnerships, Auto and IoT Line of Business, Arm.

The software platform supports connected ECU-based vehicle architectures, HPC platforms, containers / microservices and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) services.  The Zero Trust platform enables vehicles to easily and securely leverage any set of network connections, edges and clouds.

The architecture doesn’t just reduce the attack surface – the architecture minimizes the attack surface by making the autos unreachable from networks (the greatest security threat).  Similarly, the blast radius is not just reduced but is minimized by natively creating application microsegmented connections which don’t depend on IP addresses, VLANs or hardware.   The connected and autonomous vehicle security posture changes from reactive and bolted-on to secure by design.
