The Challenge: A Network that Couldn’t Keep Pace with Growth

Legacy networking couldn’t keep pace with LVT’s growth. Cameras were deployed across cellular carriers, retail Wi-Fi, and, increasingly, private 5G, often without a consistent network to build security around. The camera network was rapidly becoming a rising cost center — and a security liability.

Backhaul drove up egress costs

All camera and edge data had to route through LVT’s own sites before being distributed to customers, generating high cloud egress costs. Cellular costs were climbing too, and lower-cost alternatives like Wi-Fi often weren’t secure or reliable enough to trust with live surveillance data.

Legacy security added constant operational drag

Dependence on firewalls, ACLs, VPNs, dedicated hardware, and static IP addresses meant overhead that scaled with every new deployment. The complexity was compounded by needing separate, bespoke setups for inbound access, outbound data flows, and different edge/cloud combinations, depending on the site.

Growth ambitions were running into a wall

Without centralized telemetry, identity, and policy control across such a distributed fleet, LVT’s automation initiatives stalled out before they could scale. Newer plans, like edge computing, deeper partner integrations, and broader private 5G and Wi-Fi use, were infeasible under legacy networking’s backhaul requirements. Even a multi-cloud strategy was blocked, since VPN backhaul from carrier APNs got in the way of using more than one cloud provider at a time.

The Solution: A Zero Trust Overlay Built for a Mobile-First Fleet

LVT adopted NetFoundry’s software-only, network-independent Zero Trust overlay, eliminating the underlay dependency at the root of every challenge.

Rather than patch legacy networking piece by piece, LVT rebuilt the foundation: an architecture where the network underneath no longer mattered at all. NetFoundry’s Zero Trust overlay is embedded directly into LVT’s IoT application software via the OpenZiti SDK. It’s agentless, with no separate hardware or software to deploy in the field. Meanwhile, devices like LVT’s Nvidia-based edge hardware run thin agents where embedding isn’t practical. That distinction mattered for a fleet built to be dropped anywhere with minimal setup.

Underlay-agnostic by design

Because the overlay operates independently of whatever network sits beneath it, LVT eliminated private APNs and VPNs entirely and could freely use Wi-Fi, public APN, or private 5G depending on what a given site had available, without redesigning security for each option.

Deny-all inbound, by default

LVT, customer, and partner networks all receive LVT data without any network exposure. Every LVT unit, cloud server, and network resource stays inaccessible unless a device, service, or user completes proper multi-step authentication first. Instead of hosting perimeter security devices or opening firewall holes, every endpoint opens outbound-only sessions into the private LVT overlay. Firewall rules simply become deny-all inbound.

Data moves directly, not through a bottleneck

Some data now travels straight from cameras and edge sites to its destination, skipping the backhaul to LVT sites that had been driving up egress costs. And because the integration is embedded rather than bolted on, security travels with each unit from day one. It’s a natural fit for hardware that’s designed to be solar-powered, off-grid, and redeployed on short notice.
